Emma Florence Messinger is a Special Adviser to Peter Mannion, the Secretary of State for Social Affairs and Citizenship. She is also seen occasionally helping spin doctor Stewart Pearson with Party political business. In Series 2, the Specials and Series 3, Emma was in a relationship with Ollie Reeder.

Background[]

Professional[]

During Series 2, Ollie mentions that Emma works as an advisor to a minister by the name of Levitt and has worked in both shadow Social Affairs and shadow Defence. At some point before the Specials, Emma became an advisor to Peter Mannion MP.

Emma is the most competent of Peter Mannion's advisors and is often the most responsible of his team who actually gets stuff done. She is much preferred to Phil by Stewart Pearson, but while Peter Mannion says he likes her and believes she is good at her job, he has said he also "fears and mistrusts" her. Emma is ambitious and is often selected for additional assignments and projects by both Peter and the party leaderhsip, such as amending policy drafts for 10 Downing Street, writing Peter's CBI speech, and attending a breakfast meeting with JB alongside Stewart.

Personal[]

Emma is often implied to have come from a wealthy, conservative background. Her mother left her family when she was young; she is apparently still in contact with her father, since her ex-boyfriend Ollie Reeder once got into a fight with him at dinner over the use of racial slurs and she is often referred to as a "daddy's girl". She is known to enjoy equestrian sports.

She is shown to be the more competent of Peter Mannion's two Special Advisers, and potentially has ambitions beyond DoSAC and Mannion based on her later working relationship with Stewart Pearson. Her relationship with flatmate and coworker Phil Smith is affectionately competitive and occasionally openly antagonistic. Her relationship with her other flatmate, Affers, is less combative.

Series 2[]

During Series 2, Emma worked as an advisor to the shadow minister for Defence.
